Did Family Guy Cause FCC Complaints Spike?

The Federal Communications Commission, better known as the FCC, releases it’s quarterly report on indecency complaints every 3 months.

Did Family Guy Cause FCC Complaints Spike?

The latest released stats, which document the 1st 3 months of 2009, show a huge spike in the level of complaints in the month of March. While January and February received just 578 and 505 complaints respectively, March saw a huge 179,997 complains coming in – the same month the Parent’s Television Council (PTC) started an action alert over the March 8th episode of Family Guy, entitled “Family Gay”.

The PTC’s parental advisory system rates Family Guy “red for sex”. They said: “Should a Sunday night cartoon show YOUR children bestiality, gay orgies and babies eating sperm? Fox thinks so.”

After the episode aired, the PTC allowed its readers to fill in a pre-written FCC complaint form, enabling a potentially limitless number of people of decency to file objections with the Commission. It should be noted that the FCC does not require complainers to certify that they’ve actually seen the program in question in order to complain about it’s content.
