Did Family Guy Mock Sarah Palin’s Disabled Son?
All Headline News is claiming that Family Guy apparently mocked Sarah Palin’s son in “Extra Large Medium” last night, in which Chris takes his crush, Downs Syndrome-sufferer Ellen on a date.
Palin’s son, who also suffers from the disability, is supposedly referenced, when Ellen tells Chris her father is an accountant, and her mother is “the former governor of Alaska”.
17/02/10: Sarah Palin has now responded to the reference in the episode

Heard the same beef over at FOX. (Think the PTC is stirring up trouble because its obvious the whiners never actually watched the episode.) Can’t really be sure if it really is a crack at the son…personally, I think it was aimed more at Sarah.
They referenced it but I think mocking is a much.
I think that that bitch needs to be knocked down a peg anyway, lol
Agreed
Why exactly should Palin and her family be exempt from insult and/or parody anyway? She needs to get off her high horse.
yeah, making fun of someone with downs syndrome is fine because that person mother is sarah palin. thumbs up to family guy
Suddenly so thoughtful, GM?
you’re a stupid piece of shit
Now THATS the Green Man we know and loath.
They made fun of Helen Keller many times too. Just because someone has disabilities doesnt mean they cant be made fun of.
Hell, I didnt even view the joke as an insult to Palin or her family. I took it as nothing more than a reference to Trig. Heck, by the end of the episode, the character of Ellen ended up being regarded as a normal person because of how mean she was to Chris. How can referring to someone with Down Syndrome as “normal” be considered insulting? Looks like you might be looking for something to be offended by, and nothing more. Grow a backbone.
Not sure about this episode, did not see it yet. But, it’s okay to mock a disability just because you dislike the mother?
They did and that’s basically what you’d expect from Family Guy.
Well, just shows to go ya, people can’t even handle the simplist of things these days <=/.
Well…i thought it was one of the best episodes in awhile…plus the music for down syndrome girl was fantastic! People need to loosen up a bit
I can’t belive they would think that! :0 xx
Well i got the reference to Palin, but had no idea she had a son with down syndrome
Neither did I :0 xx
First the David Letterman incident, and now this. When will Palin realize that she is not a god, and that she is as much a target as I am. Just because you make a cameo on SNL, and slightly poke fun at yourself, doesn’t make you invincible.
We can’t just demand her to be cool and pretend it’s allright. She may not like to be or have her kids being referenced on TV, but it’s not like her son was mocked at all. Family Guy made an unexpectedly polemic joke like always, the harassing is all in their minds, not in the show.
She ran for Vice President of the United States. One would think she’d understand the whole “freedom of speech” and “freedom of expression” thing…
Given that she is a republican, my guess is that “freedom of speech and expression” are contradictory to her policy.
i think this is revange from palin to seth mcfarlane’s mockery of her during the elections
Palin is in the news now but I firmly believe shes destined to be no more than a political footnote and obscure joke like Ross Perot eight years from now…if that long.
Sorry Buck, had to reply here cos the comment box seems to have disappeared
Anyway I don’t see how its mocking her son at all, just making reference to that fact. If they were making fun of him they would of set up some sort of punchline or do something funny.
Yeah, I agree, they actually empowered the character in making her so bitchy.
So now the comment box appears, maybe cos i clicked a reply button on someone elses, then decided to write an entire message?
Loving her self righteousness in that clip.
This woman said some incredibly nasty things about the homosexual community, Has the incredible stance of being against abortion and yet has no problem with hunting.
I also dont think parading her son around trying to get the sympathy vote was acceptable either. That said, you could argue by leaving him at home she would be accused of hiding him away.
Hear, hear!
Well thats what Sarah gets for shooting wolves. I’m pretty sure Seth is an animal lover.
Please don’t vote her into the office in 2012…
I did not realize some people cant take a joke in this country its a cartoon get over it and do we really care what Palin thinks?
can nobody in the news media tell that this was a shot at sarah and not her kid? The character was portrayed as mean and unsympathetic unlike many similar characters. And for gods sake why won’t sarah palin fade into obscurity already?
When she says “This world is full of cruel, cold-hearted people” I really do hope she was talking about herself.
Does anybody have the link to the vid on youtube?
You can get the URL by clicking on the box at the bottom right corner of the video, or right-click on the video and click “Watch on YouTube”.
Having just watched the episode myself, I can now offer a more valid opinion on the episode rather than just the clip Sarah ‘Hypocrite’ Palin was so upset over.
The only gripe i had with the episode wasnt about ellen at all. It was the number of jokes that just didnt click. Starlight express, the duck in congress, the two guys had a light grasp on english, all where jokes that i just didnt find funny.
Dont get me wrong, a couple of the others where very well done. Quagmire as a condom, Stewie digging a hole for his head, megs queef, stewies “i bet she had a bunny, but not anymore”. The musical number was good too (seth is a fantastic singer).
As far as the whole sarah palin issue goes, it was just one throwaway line that didnt go anywhere. Had her reference not been made, then there wouldnt have been this uproar. This was no reference to her son since ellen is clearly a girl about chris’ age and was set up long before she even mentioned her mother. The writers could have just made it about her condition (there were some jokes and even a musical number) but they didnt go down such a route and made her far more dimensional than most dramas do about people with conditions such as hers.
The message here was that just because a person has down syndrome, doesnt immediately mean they are automatically a nice person. To paraphrase Chris, they are just a bunch of assholes like the rest of us. That is probably the most offensive, but most honest message you can make.
The PC brigade of course will have a field day with this episode. Part of their problem is that they will only see her and see a down syndrome girl. I saw a girl named ellen who wasnt DEFINED by her down syndrome, but that she was nasty to poor timid chris.
Overall id give this episode 8/10 and thats mainly for the number of unfunny jokes that held this episode back.
IRONICALLY, she’s talking on FOX News. Was she drunk or something? I think that interviewer was laughing his ass off in his head. She needs to get laid.
